Semaforo (Traffic Light)

Cities are agglomerations of signs and signals, semantic environments through which we orient ourselves and construct our perceptual habits. But what would happen if the human environment were infused with the signs we ourselves wear – the clothes we put on, our personal semantic compendium? Venturelli playfully creates hybrids between different sign typologies, dressing urban objects in skirts, wigs and feather boas, relieving the burden of pure functionality with the frivolity of clothing, hairstyles and accessories. More than a surrealist gesture, this becomes a critique of the sign: the object’s function remains intact, yet it is rendered humorous and allusive.
